WhisperoftheHeart 786936820164 500 Blu Ray Review: Whisper of the Heart (1995)

Hayao Miyazaki’s Whisper of the Heart is a coming of age tale about a girl in middle school named Shizuku. She has a huge imagination and loves to write.  Like many writers, she sees stuff about life that most people are too distracted to notice. One day, she finds herself sitting next to a cat while riding a bus and she follows the cat to a neighborhood at the top of a hill.  There she finds an antique store with a peculiar cat statue that sparks her imagination. She also starts up a friendship with a boy from school who just …

Secret World 1 Blu ray Review: The Secret World of Arrietty

The Secret World of Arrietty is another lush, visually enthralling classic from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Dubbed with great care by Disney and now on blu-ray with an amazing transfer, the movie springs to life. Based on the novel The Borrowers and written by the master Miyazaki, the look of the movie is quite stunning and full of vibrant life. The story also has a gentle message about respecting all creatures and beings regardless of their size or place in the food chain. Far from preachy, the movie is also just a fun adventure that bounces along from one great …

c8ace51c Blu Ray Review: Castle in the Sky (1986)

Laputa: Castly in the Sky was Hayao Miyazaki’s first film put out by his Studio Ghibli production company.  The ground-breaking effort set a standard for later films such as My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004).  From themes, to animation to the characters and the soundtrack, this fingerprint is easily identified in his subsequent works.

In a featurette titled “Creating Castle in the Sky,” Miyazaki credits his childhood dreams for inspiring him to create his films.  “Flying in adventure stories like Laputa was my childhood dream…I wanted to create a sci-fi adventure.” Several other influences can be identified such …

Iron Man Iron Man: Anime, DVD Review!

I’m probably the LAST person to rate something related to Iron Man, I’m not big on most of what Marvel does, however I am an old school fan of Anime and so I looked at it through the eyes of an Anime fan and man, I was very impressed.

Written by Marvel’s Warren Ellis and re-written from that story by the writers at Madhouse in Japan, the Iron Man Anime takes the viewer into a later stage of Tony Stark’s career. Tony travels to Japan with nothing but peace in mind after years of manufacturing and selling weapons. In order to …
