2008 was a pretty good year us nerds. More comic books were turned into movies and for the most part, they were pretty good. The high def war finally ended with Blu-ray knocking out HD and consumers finally had the confidence to go Blu. Last but not least, video games are more popular than ever. Here’s our look at the best and worst of ‘08.

How fitting that this Resident Evil movie is called Degeneration, because that’s what I think about the CG animation in this movie. Fans of the game will enjoy this, but the CG animation and the voice acting really put a damper in a movie that’s just another rehash of an “unknown infestation spreads while our heroes have to stop the evil corporation” storyline; only this time, it starts out at an airport. Didn’t I see this in Flight of the Living Dead?

Ever since Phantom Menace came out, midnight screenings has been a common practice at big multiplexes for high profile movies. Last one I went to was for The Dark Knight and there were at least 1000 people in line. Dark Knight was shown in 7 sold out theatres. I enjoy midnight screenings because of the energy from the fans and you have some people dressed up as their favorite characters.
Meet Jordan and Calvin. They love to attend midnight screenings and don’t mind dressing up for the occassions. They’ve been doing it for a couple of years. To get a better understanding of the midnight screening madness, we decided to do an interview:
I had little knowledge about this movie before its release. Once I found out that it was directed by David Fincher and was based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I got excited. This would also be the third time that Brad Pitt and David Fincher would be working together. I’m not much of a bookworm, but since it was based on the short story, I had enough time to read it before the movie came out. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) is a story about a man who was born old and in time grows younger while everyone around him grows older. It’s very interesting because of how his life is the opposite of everyone else.

I knew nothing about this movie coming in for the world premiere. It was a chance for me to meet Uwe Boll for a Q&A before the movie. I was disappointed to find out that he was doing the Q&A via a webcam. The event was being held at Downtown Independent, which was holding an Uwe Boll festival, a two-day marathon of his works including Far Cry, Postal, BloodRayne and Alone in the Dark.
As much as it pains me to say it, this movie is pretty decent. Tunnel Rats is a movie that came out of left field from one of the most detested film makers in recent history, considering most of his popular, or unpopular movies were poor video game adaptations. Tunnel Rats follows a small unit of American soldiers during the Vietnam War fighting their enemies in an endless underground tunnel. The Vietnamese soldiers would use these tunnels to amount surprise attacks.

I was excited to watch Keanu in a role that only he can play so well in The Day the Earth Stood Still. But with poor reviews pouring in from friends and critics, I was hesitant. I’ve heard about Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino movie and saw that it was out in select theatres in New York and Los Angeles, so I had to go there and check it out. I just couldn’t miss a chance to see Clint Eastwood harass punk kids.

Went to Best Buy at Orange, CA for Dark Knight’s midnight release. About 70 people were in line. The ratio of male to female was about 6 to 1. This really was a nerd event. Here’s the video of the line:
There’s so many exclusives for Dark Knight on DVD & Blu Ray that I’m getting confused. Below is a list of the exclusives and the prices from the major retailers. Thanks to Speedy from cheapassgamer.com for the early prices. The prices are for the exclusives, not the regular DVD set.
Best Buy:
They have the most exclusives, including figures and masks and joker trading cards. The Joker figure looks pretty cool but probably not worth the $10 price tag. The masks are crap.

Wanted is a hardcore, ultra-violent action flick. It’s loud and extremely stylish. It’s hard to on some level to defend a film so in love with violence and bullets, so there’s no reason to even try to do so. The 2 DVD set boasts some nifty extras as well. The cast members are all good (Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman are especially well cast)but the real star of the film is Russian director Timur Bekmambetov. The director of the cult Russian hits Night Watch and Day Watch, he will have a long career in Hollywood doing big budget action films.
