Long Beach Fight Night 3 Recap

Cricket

Even though I’ve been an MMA fan since the early UFC’s, I’ve never been to local show. All the MMA events I’ve attended consisted of K-1, Pride and UFC events. I found out about Long Beach Fight Night through a friend and decided to check it out. I was surprised about the great production value for a “small” show: the ring was well lit, fights continued smoothly throughout the night and everyone had a good view of the ring. What’s even more surprising was the amount of people that showed up.

MMA: UFC 92 Afterthoughts

Mongoose

Wow, what an event! Most of the fighters I was rooting for lost, and a new light-heavyweight champion was crowned. I will only write about the 3 fights that were significant to the rankings of the UFC.

MMA: UFC 92 Predictions

Mongoose

Here comes another big event for the UFC. It showcases some new talent and the 3rd rematch between Jackson and Silva. So, here are my predictions.

Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans - This one is hard to call. Both fighters came from the Ultimate Fighter show, and now they’re fighting for the belt. Evans is a solid fighter, but never been tested until he defeated the former champ in Chuck Liddell. Griffin has more fights against experienced fighters under his belt, like his wins against Shogun Rua and Quentin “Rampage” Jackson. I pick Griffin to win this due to experience and the fact that he trains with one of the smartest fighter in mma history, Randy Couture. Evans should slow down in the 4th and 5th round, rendering the victory to the more tested Griffin via Judge Decision.

DVD Review: Confessions of a Pit Fighter

Ccfmds

After languishing on the shelf since 2005, the straight-to-DVD Confessions Of A Pit Fighter is easily one of the worst films of the year. Simply, the film is just awful. A cast of real-life fighters (including former MMA champ Quinton Rampage  Jackson) and a few professional actors (who should have known better) make up the cast of this dreadful film. The perpetually sneering Armand Assante sneers and walks through his clichéd villain role half asleep (and sneering). John Savage is the other decent actor in the cast who plays a nasty parole officer. The rest of the cast includes the hideous and some other non-actors. The film looks cheap and the DVD doesn’t even feature chapter stops.

MMA: UFC 91 - Lesnar vs. Couture - Predictions

Mongoose

Lesnar, what is that on your chest pointing towards your mouth?

I’m excited about this event. The overall card is okay, but the main event is going to be spectacular. Here are my predictions for the televised fights.

Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar - This fight will be explosive, at least in the first round. Lesnar fights like a bull, while Couture is always the tactician. Although, Lesnar defeated Heath Herring in a convincing fashion, he’s till considered unproven in MMA with a record of 2-1. Coutures has been fighting in the UFC since the blackout days when the UFC wasn’t allowed on PPV. Now, Couture is older, but most fans have come to learn that you never bet against the “old man.”
Prediction - Lesnar will try to overpower Couture and try to finish him early, but Couture will weather the storm and finish Lesnar with a rear-naked-choke.

UFC 90 Recap

Cricket

UFC 90 Poster

The event looked weak on card but it was pretty eventful: one upset and entertaining matches.  Here we go:

Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote - For the well deserved hype Anderson Silva has received, he didn’t look too impressive against the major underdog, Patrick Cote.  Sure, he showed off his dazzling moves but he didn’t follow up his attacks.  Maybe he didn’t train hard for the fight or he was afraid of Cote’s KO power.  The fight ended when Cote re injured his leg on the third round.  Pretty disapointing main event

UFC 90: Predictions and Summary

Mongoose

Cote already looks scared! Diego was replaced by Koscheck due to a “back injury.”

UFC 90 is a weak PPV card. If it was free, then I wouldn’t complain. There are no real stars here except for Anderson Silva. But he is matched up with against a mediocre fighter in Cote. And that’s the main event.

These are the televised fights.

Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote - This is going to be a title fight. Let’s be honest here, Cote does not have a chance at winning this. Silva ran through more accomplished opponents such as Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin. Silva will take this by KO mid first round.

MMA: EliteXC Folds

Mongoose

As of today, EliteXC is dead. Their last event shown on CBS was a success in terms of ratings, but it wasn’t enough to keep the company afloat. Although, controversy after the event, and outside the cage may have caused damage to the company’s reputability. On a post-fight interview, Seth Petruzelli claimed that EliteXC promoters offered him extra money to stand with Kimbo. This comment caused enough controversy for Florida’s Athletic Commission to open an investigation. Another controversy was when EliteXC’s president was seen on air rooting for Kimbo, hinting more to the idea that XC promoters desperately wanted Kimbo to win. He later apologized for his behavior and claimed that he was yelling at the referee because Petruzelli was punching Kimbo in the back of the head, which was illegal.
