Comic-Con is Taking Over

Comic-Con is just around the corner and I can’t wait to go. This article from msn.com pretty much nails it.  It’s clear! Geekdom has taken over and it is already mainstream. Comic-con started off small and now it’s a sold out event at the San Diego Convention Center with over 120,000 attendees. It’s an event that originally promoted sci-fi, comics, fantasy and film and now has added horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectibles and video games into the mix. Comic-Con attracts the big movie studios and stars.

Blockbuster movies of 2008? Mamma Mia? I kid I kid.  If you look at the top movies of 2008, you’ll notice nothing but sci-fi or comic book movies. As of July 22, 2008, boxofficemojo.com has Iron man, a marvel super hero character, at the top spot grossing in $314 million so far. Indiana Jones came in second. Hancock is 4rth, the Dark Knight came in 6th, and that movie just came out last week. The Incredible Hulk and Wanted came in 10th and 11th respectively. Hellboy premiered with around $50 million.

What does this mean? Does it mean that America is turning nerdy and geeky? Why are nerds and geeks looked down upon if popular consensus suggests that everyone has a little nerd inside them? We’re already a nation that is wired to computers, cell phones, the internet, youtube and myspace.

I say, the days of the jocks will come to an end, and the nerds will rise, fulfilling Bill Gates dream of a world where nerds can calculate in peace.  But for now, we can proudly show our geek pride at Comic-Con this week.
