In this film, Rodriguez teams up with his buddy Quentin Tarantino. You know what that means. A lot of artistic violence and very well textured script writing. This film is proof that low-budget does not equal to shitty movies. Uwe Boll, you need to watch some Rodriguez flicks. The movie follows two brothers running from the law, only to end up in a hellish bar, full of naked chicks, called the Titty Twister. Man, I love that name.

This film captivated me mostly because of its dialogue. Clooney and Tarantino are great at playing 2 crazy brothers. Clooney, being the older of the two ran the show. While, Tarantino plays a psychotic delusional pervert, that is both creepy and likable at the same time. The acting is a bit over-the-top but it fits the script, so it works well. Expect to see the usual suspects in the cast which includes Danny Trejo, Selma Hayek, and Cheech Marin.

Can you still turn this movie down?

The movie was great all the way through until they started fighting vampires. Then, it became okay. Don’t get me wrong, the action scenes were entertaining as hell, but it almost became a different movie. It wasn’t as realistic as it was before, and the characters lost their sense of reality. The brothers were scarier before they started fighting the vampires. Plus, I enjoyed the idea of not rooting for the main characters.

Overall, the movie is well worth watching. It doesn’t feel too long which is always a plus, I hate movies that are too long. The cast is great, and Rodriguez does a wonderful job of putting this film together. So, if you haven’t seen this flick, go check it out.

“It’s the best, most complete game I’ve ever worked on.” - Peter Molyneux, Fable Mastermind

God I love Peter Molyneux. A month and a half before the game was released, Peter had a chance to play and review his own game. He said, “I’d rate it a 9 out of 10.” But we all know that Peter likes to hype his games up. Now that I have finished playing Fable II, I’d have to disagree with him.

The world of Albion has changed since you last visit it, well actually, not so much. Five hundred years have passed since the first Fable. You start off as a young boy/girl with an older sister who takes care of you. With you and your sis out and about, mysterious cloaked lady comes to you, telling you that magic exist. You hesitate to believe her, but since you’re curious, you listen to what she has to say. She tells you that your answers will be revealed in a special musical box. That’s when everything changes. The musical box that you retrieved disappears, and a bunch of soldiers come to your home. Your sister believes that they’ll be taken to the castle to live happily there, but you meet Lucien, the antagonist of the game, and he kills your sister because he believes you guys are the fourth heroes that came to thwart his evil plans. You’re saved by the mysterious lady when Lucien shoots you, making you fall out the window in the highest part of the castle.

You’re now older and on a mission to find and kill Lucien. You must find three heroes to help you forge the ultimate weapon. Let’s just say the ending is very anticlimactic. Part of what makes a good RPG is the story, and with a story that’s bare bones, it’s already a huge minus for the game. Complete game my ass, Peter!

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to the first, but somehow I feel as if my character reaction is slower this time around. For example, when you’re running, it’s hard for him or her to make a quick turn. Combat is simple where X does all your different melee attacks, Y does all your long-range attacks, and B does all your magic spells. When I’m fighting, I opted for the powerful flourishes where you hold X, then let it go. I was able to beat the game using mostly flourishes. The game does not encourage you to try other moves because the flourish melee is very strong and practical, while using magic spells was useless to me since it takes a while for your character to power up for the stronger spells, and when you do use it, it’s still not as powerful as the flourishes. Since no enemy was able to block my attacks most of the time, countering isn’t necessary, and I’m a guy who loves counter moves.

For a game that has a lot of fighting, I wish the camera controls were faster. There’s no way to change the sensitivity, only an option to invert the camera angle.

The people of Albion reacts to your expressions, just like the first, but feels like it’s been tacked on just for fun. Expressions are just ways for you to communicate with people, like farting, dancing, flirting, kissing and more. Let’s just say the people of Albion are easily amused and have serious ADD.

The menu system is slow and every time you use an item, it goes back to the main menu. It doesn’t break the game but it is a little annoying because if you want to use many items or equip them, you have to go back to the list every time use one.

Graphics

The graphics for the game is very nice, but could be a lot better when compared to the first Fable. The style is still very cartoony for a more serious tone. The colors are less vibrant this time around and overall have an earthy tone.

Sound

The sound makes good use of surround sound. When you’re in the woods or open fields, you’ll hear nature all around you. When you’re in a town, you’ll hear people all around you, making the town a busy place. But it does get old because the people of Albion say the same things over and that can get annoying when you’re just walking around town exploring. I do like the addition of the gargoyle hunts, because the best way to find this is audio cues. You’ll hear a little squeaky man’s voice taunting you that you can’t find him, and when you find where the voice is coming from, it’s a statue. Pretty creepy if you ask me. And for the music, it has a nice somber feel but doesn’t have any memorable tunes like it did in the first Fable.

Conclusion

I did expect a lot out of this game because it’s a sequel to a game that I really enjoyed for its interactive living world and choices for good and evil. Now years later, after playing the first and other games with moral choices like Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, this game feels very ordinary. It just doesn’t have a lot of new features for it to feel like an entirely new experience, but for those of you who haven’t played the first, you’ll probably enjoy it more. It’s a game that can be enjoyable but don’t go in hoping for something really groundbreaking. The main story is short, and after finishing some quests, the replayability is low.

A lot of people have been giving EA a hard time because they feel EA is taking over other game companies like a dictatorship. They feel as if EA is turning in a quick buck (quantity over quality). They may be right, but I’m glad that EA is taking a chance with new properties like Mirror’s Edge. It’s a nice change of pace from all the sequels coming out like Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Prince of Persia, Fable II, and Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Mirror’s Edge is a first person game that focuses on parkour, free running. The game makes you feel like an experienced runner. Moving around has never looked and felt this awesome. With all the abilities you have, moving around the city is a cake walk. The game encourages you to run away from the enemies instead of engaging them. It gives you that adrenaline rush of what it would feel like to be a fugitive and always on the run. Breakdown was another first person game that tried to emulate the feeling of being the main character in first person, but it didn’t succeed because of the clunky controls and unimaginative game design.

Story

It’s the distant future. Corporations and the government have become a totalitarian society where everything is monitored and the blues (cops) are out in full force. But there are those who want a free society and have rebelled against them. The resistance uses “runners” to deliver messages for them under the shadows (or more like on city rooftops).

You play as Faith, a runner, who is trying to help prove her sister’s innocence from a murder. The victim’s a candidate for mayor who’s seen as a man that can change the corrupt government. The game uses a mix of first person cutscenes and Flash-style animation. The animation is kind of cool, but it does take you away from the experience of feeling like you’re inside Faith’s eye. As for the rest of the story, it’s a nice concept, but is mainly used to give you a city to play with.

Gameplay

The game is fast paced and fun. Escaping the cops makes you feel like Harrison Ford in The Fugitive. Chasing after other runners makes you feel like Jason Bourne.  And just moving around the city will make you feel like you can do anything in real life, or maybe not.

You’re Faith’s eyes and ears. When you run, you’ll see your vision shifting left and right while seeing Faith’s hand swing left and right. When jumping, you’ll see her legs and feet curl and then stretch, reaching for the ground. Pretty much anything that you do, you’ll see Faith’s hands and feet performing the appropriate action.

Since you’ll be on top of rooftops a lot, you’re likely going to be falling to your death a lot. There will be plenty moments of “wtf” when you fall, but the reloading time is fast with many checkpoints, so dying won’t piss you off as much. Another useful button lets you know where you’re suppose to go so you’ll never be at a dead end from going the wrong way.

Controls

With a game that makes you maneuver over rooftops, hallways, scaffoldings and walls with ease, the controls are tight and intuitive. Jumping, sliding, ducking, rolling, wall running, disarming and counter-attacking is a lot of fun and smooth when you get the hang of the controls.

The critics would say that the action department needs work. I’d have to disagree. Since the sensitivity for movement and looking around is really high to give you the freedom to freely run, the shooting plays a secondary role. The aiming is really sensitive to movement and holding weapons will bog you down from running fast. This is done on purpose so that the focus would be on running. But when it comes down to action, disarming is the best and coolest way to take out your enemies. The timing is tricky, but you should get the hang of it.

Graphics

The graphics are nice and the color palette is mostly white with color mostly used to represent destination points. The city looks breathtaking from afar, but when up close, not so much. It’s not really distracting because the city looks nice and clean anyway. The lighting is really good, especially when you run out the door and you only see the brightness outside as your eyes are trying to adjust. I was on top of this one building looking down the other smaller ones, and there was a gap between buildings that allowed the sun light to shine through parts of the other buildings. You can see the sun rays just glowing radiantly. It looks really good.

Sound and Music

The audio makes good use of surround sound. From running and jumping through the air, you’ll hear the wind whooshing around your ears. Looking down at the city, you’ll hear cars moving and the city busy with activity. Running and busting through doors sounds cool and the many sounds of Faith grunting while grabbing, running, and jumping sounds hot. The sound of gun bullets whizzing by with helicopters flying behind you always makes you feel uneasy and sweating.

The music as a whole has a lot of ambience when you’re just admiring the skyscrapers. But when you’re being chased, the music quickly changes to make you feel rushed. The theme song, Still Alive, is beautiful and has a similar style to Frou Frou. Check it out.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed this game. I love the feeling of being a runner in first person view. The adrenaline of running away from cops is exhilarating. The ability to disarm cops and use their guns against them makes me feel like Trinity from the Matrix (too bad the Matrix games were awful). The moments of falling down and disarm timing can piss you off, but once you get the hang of the controls, you’ll feel like an unstoppable force. The length of the game does hurt the game a little. I was able to finish it in less than a day in two sittings. Unless you like to redo the levels with speed runs, this will be best for a rental or when the price goes down. Minor setbacks aside, it’s a heart pumping, run for your life, satisfying thrill ride that shouldn’t be missed.

I’m really enjoying the new reboot of the James Bond franchise.  I was never a huge Bond fan.  Most of the films were bland and repetitive.  Sean Connery was clearly the best Bond.  He was suave and just a lot of fun.  After the initial excellent Bond films I really lost interest in the series.  Pierce Brosnan (not a bad actor) did what was required of the role, but nothing more.  Goldeneye was a rousing start with the lovely Famke Jansen (crushing men between her thighs….what’s not to love), but his series of films quickly grew as rotten as Halle Berry’s acting in Die Another Day.  Daniel Craig renewed the energy and brought the gritty (and the pain) as James Bond in Casino Royale.  The massively entertaining Bond film which breathed new life into the bland Bond franchise.  The underrated Quantum of Solace is a highly entertaining action piece that follows the Bourne model of action flicks.

Solace starts with a terrific opening song from Jack White (White Stripes) and Alicia Keyes and plunges us into a nifty car chase.  Bond is out for revenge after being betrayed by his former love Vesper.  Feeling conflicted over his betrayal, and mostly wanting revenge for her death and to find the man (or organization) that set her up, Bond goes on a massive manhunt.  The trail leads to a beautiful (but quite deadly) woman named Camille (the lovely Olga Kurylenko) who has her own reasons for revenge and an environmentalist named Dominic Greene (the fine actor Matthieu Amalric, OK, but kind of wasted) who has a sinister plan for stealing an important natural resource for his own profit.  Judi Dench (as M) and a few other actors return from Casino Royale and the acting is generally strong with Craig in firm command as Bond.  A cold, calculated killing machine, he doesn’t mesh with the older Bond fans and what they want out of Bond.  They want a bland cipher who sips martinis and beds hotties.  That just won’t do for me in this post- Bourne era.  Craig now just needs a compelling (and more physical villain) to go up against, and the next Bond could be one of the all time best in franchise history.

Fast-paced and well-made, Quantum of Solace is solid entertainment.  It’s not as good storywise as Casino Royale, but its easily the best Bond film (besides Casino Royale) since Goldeneye.  The older Bond fans may not like this new, gritty Bond but I’ll take his intensity any day over the bland Bonds of the past.  Daniel Craig is the Bond of the future, and the franchise can only get better from here.  Solace is something of a solid filler film, and the next Bond should be thrilling and an equal to Casino Royale.

Tinker Bell came into my childhood when I first watched Disney’s Peter Pan. I wasn’t a fan of her because she acted like a little brat. In the cartoon, she has a thing for Peter and would get mad when Peter and Wendy were together. I was later introduced to Tink again in the live action movie “Hook.” In this version, she has the same feisty personality and was played by Julia Roberts. Her love for Peter was more apparent when she uses her magic to become as big as Peter. That’s a big Tink! Click on the link for the full review.

McFarlane has launched its newest Halo 3 line: Legendary Collection. Previous Halo 3 figures from Mcfarlane were well articulated, about 5 inches and ranged from $10 -$15. The previous lines were too small for me, so I waited for the Legendary line. The Legendary figures are bigger, limited articulation, and of course, the dynamic posse. Pretty much what you expect from a McFarlane line. But this time around, the figures costs around $20. Is it worth the price? Without further ado, here’s my Legendary Master Chief review:

After languishing on the shelf since 2005, the straight-to-DVD Confessions Of A Pit Fighter is easily one of the worst films of the year. Simply, the film is just awful. A cast of real-life fighters (including former MMA champ Quinton Rampage  Jackson) and a few professional actors (who should have known better) make up the cast of this dreadful film. The perpetually sneering Armand Assante sneers and walks through his clichéd villain role half asleep (and sneering). John Savage is the other decent actor in the cast who plays a nasty parole officer. The rest of the cast includes the hideous and some other non-actors. The film looks cheap and the DVD doesn’t even feature chapter stops.

“Confessions Of A Pit Fighter” is the cliché-ridden tale of an ex-con who wants to live a normal life. His brother is killed in an illegal underground street fight in East Los Angeles. He then goes back into the criminal underworld on a journey of revenge. The fact that the film is cheaply made is a given but would some exciting fights be too much to ask for? This film has no exciting action scenes, terrible acting, and almost zero story.  There’s also a numbing tough guy voiceover narration that makes things even worse.  The DVD has no extra features and a shabby widescreen transfer. At 99 minutes, the film feels like an eternity and is a chore to sit through.

The movie is a dreadful bore with not one exciting action scene of which to speak. The acting is strictly amateur-hour and the film isn’t even worth a rental. Fans of mixed martial arts are better off with David Mamet’s “Redbelt” (and even the hokey “Never Back Down” was better than this dreck) or just watching the real thing. This film has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Paying an actual pit fighter to give you a roundhouse kick to the head would be a much less painful way of wasting your money.

I hate going to Hollywood because of traffic, plain and simple.  I probably go to Hollywood once or twice a year.  But three weeks ago, I was invited to a party at House of Blues by a close friend.   I’ve never been to the place so I was excited and reluctant at the same time.  Got to the place about thirty minutes early and talked to the door person.  He asked me if I was with a party and I told him the person that invited me.  To my surprise, he gave me a concert ticket and a wristband.  The group performing was The Foreigner.  I’m not into music so I didn’t know who they were.  But at the end of the night, I learned I loved some of their songs but just didn’t know who performed it.

Once the party arrived, we started ordering food.  One guy in the party, told us he saw Lindsay Lohan on the second floor with her girlfriend.  Oh shit, Fire Crotch is in the same venue as I am!  She was so hot in Mean Girls, gotta talk to her.  We were on the third floor, so my friend and I head down to the second floor with a camera.  We see Lindsay sitting on the edge of the balcony.  She was with her girlfriend, Samantha Ronson.  Lindsay looked really skinny and probably weighed about 90 lbs.  No fat at all.  We were about to approach them but the security guard kicked us out because we didn’t have the VIP wristbands.  We go back up and finish our desserts.

Concert was about to start so all of us head down to the second floor.  Our party is by the left corner of the stage, while Lindsay was in the middle of the stage.  Foreigner starts performing and one of the first songs they played was “JukeBox Hero.”  I noticed my friend was missing and so was Lindsay.  He comes back and tells me he tried to take a picture with her but she said “I can’t, sorry.”

About 30 minutes later, Lindsay and her girl leave.  We stalk her ass outside.  My friend didn’t want to do shit anymore because he already got turned down.  I told him I’d ask this time.  We see them walking down the outside stairs by themselves.  I call out “Lindsay, Lindsay.”  Samantha turns around and wanted to talk.  Lindsay kept on walking and all I heard was a bitchy ass “NO!” from her.  She didn’t even turn her back to face me.  I was shocked because I thought she’d be nicer.  Damn, I really thought she’d at least stop and talk because we were the only ones in the vicinity.  I went back to the concert sad.  My friend still stayed outside and he told me later that he approached them and said he was a big fan of hers.  He said Lindsay said “Thanks” but not much else.

In Lindsay’s defense she’s probably sick and tired of fans always asking her for pictures and the paparazzis chasing her down .  She just wanted privacy.  But then again, she’s the first celebrity I’ve met that ignored her fans.  The last song Foreigners played was “I Wanna Know What Love Is” and  I definitely didn’t feel any from the fire crotch.

Lesnar, what is that on your chest pointing towards your mouth?

I’m excited about this event. The overall card is okay, but the main event is going to be spectacular. Here are my predictions for the televised fights.

Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar - This fight will be explosive, at least in the first round. Lesnar fights like a bull, while Couture is always the tactician. Although, Lesnar defeated Heath Herring in a convincing fashion, he’s till considered unproven in MMA with a record of 2-1. Coutures has been fighting in the UFC since the blackout days when the UFC wasn’t allowed on PPV. Now, Couture is older, but most fans have come to learn that you never bet against the “old man.”
Prediction - Lesnar will try to overpower Couture and try to finish him early, but Couture will weather the storm and finish Lesnar with a rear-naked-choke.

Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson - Both came from the Ultimate Fighter television show. This fight should be interesting, as both fighters are very experienced on the ground. Although, Florian has been working on his muay thai for years now, it didn’t show in his last fight. Stevenson is a strong wrestler with a big heart. He’ll keep fighting until the end.
Prediction - Although Florian is a BJJ expert, he doesn’t always submit his opponents. So, Stevenson will win via control on the ground.

Amir Sadollah vs. Nick Catone - I don’t know who Catone is but Sadollah was the Ultimate Fighter winner. He came to the show as a striker, but ended up submitting his opponents. He’s a well-rounded fighter and entertaining to watch, so he’s got a future in the UFC.
Prediction - Catone is getting fed to the wolves. The UFC wants to build Sadollah, so they pair him with a newcomer. I think that Sadollah will showcase his stand-up in this fight. Sadollah wins by KO.
Update - This fight has been cancelled due to a leg infection from Sadollah. The UFC tried to find a replacement but with no luck. This fight will be replaced by Dustin Hazelett and Tamdan McCrory. I don’t know both fighters so I’m not going to try to predict.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks - Gonzaga was going to be the UFCs next star, instead he buckles under pressure and quits early in his fights. Although, he became well-known when he KOd Crocop with a high-kick. However, he underperformed in his next 2 fights against Couture and Werdrum.  Hendricks has a good record of 18-4 but none of his wins are against notable fighters.
Prediction - Gonzaga wins via submission (armbar). Hendricks does not have the high-calibre experience to beat Gonzaga.

Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia - Quarry’s last fight was with the infamous Kaleb Starnes. Starnes did nothing in that fight but run around for 3 rounds. Quarry became frustrated and started mocking Starnes late in the 3rd. That was the highlight of the fight. Although, it wasn’t Quarry’s fault that Starnes became a marathon runner, people will still remember him as part of that debacle. Maia is somewhat of a newcomer, he’s been impressing his way to the top. Maia defeated Jason Mcdonald and Ed Herman in his last 2 outings. Anybody that can embarass Herman is good in my book. That was fun to watch. Maia is 8-0 in his young career. It’s always a good sign when a fighter has only 8 wins but against notable and more experienced fighters.
Prediction - Maia will surprise Quarry with his stand-up. He will knock Quarry down, and finish him off on the ground with a Rear-Naked-Choke.

Now we’re getting to the good stuff.  An exciting episode from Heroes? You’re kidding me right?  Well this episode has me excited only because it was able to link season 3 to season 1.  Even though the episode is called “Villains,” it should have been called, “How Heroes Got Fun.”

The Past

In the last episode, we end up with Hiro with the African’s power, which I learned in this episode that his name is Usutu.  Hiro’s eyes turn white and he is unconscious.  With the Usutu’s powers, he is now able to see the past, about 18 months to 12 months ago, which is the events taking place before and around the first episode of season one.

Meredith

In the previous episode, Meredith teams up with HRG.  In this episode, you get to see that she has worked for the Company before, by partnering up with Thompson (Eric Roberts, from such hits as The Dark Knight).  She partners up with him, only after being caught by him.  Thompson also captures Flint, which we find out is Meredith’s brother.  After finding out that Flint is locked up, Meredith breaks him free from his prison, and they both escape to Mexico.  Thompson follows them and Meredith uses her flames to escape from Thompson, but in doing so, derails the train by catching it on fire.

After the chase, Thompson finally cuffs Meredith, only to find out the reason why she ran away in the first place because she doesn’t trust the Company.  The Company has taken her daughter, which she believed to be dead during the fire that she presumably created during a house fire.  Thompson decides to let her go.

If you have read the online comics from season one, then you’d know that Claire was found during a house fire, and that’s when the Company found her and takes her to HRG to adopt.  I love it when things piece together.  And it’s in that scene with the train on fire that Claire shows up to rescue a man caught in the fire that was from season one.  I wasn’t sure if it was Flint, but I’m going to assume it’s him that she rescued.

Sylar, Elle and HRG

Season one was about stopping Sylar.  This episode shows Sylar with the capacity for human emotion even before Angela changed him.  After finding out that his hunger for power comes at a cost of human life, he tries to commit suicide, but Elle comes just in time to save him.  She pretends to befriend him, but in turn, has grown a soft spot for him.

HRG tells Elle that she has to make Sylar feed, because the Company finds his powers fascinating.  She succeeds by bringing in a young dude named Trevor with the power to break glasses by pointing at them (really?).  Elle makes Sylar jealous of Trevor and in the end, Sylar’s animal instinct takes over and he kills and takes Trevor’s power.  I find it ironic that HRG’s most feared enemy was his own creation because of his loyalty to the Company.

The Petrelli Family

Now we get to the main plot of the episode.  How is it that Arthur was living all this time when we, the audience, were told otherwise?  Who’s the real angel?  And who was the one that put Arthur in a coma in the first place?  That would be Angela.

Angela has gained a lot more respect for me now.  We find out that Angela was the one that put Arthur in the hospital by poisoning his food with the help of the Haitian to block his powers so that he couldn’t read her mind.  She did this because Arthur was trying to kill Nathan, their son.  Nathan was trying to bring Linderman down, and Arthur felt threatened because it would bring him down too. This is why Arthur ordered a hit on his own son.

We see that Linderman always was a decent guy.  He healed Angela’s mind because of what Arthur did to her.  He erased her memory so that she would comply.  Ok, wait a minute, if Arthur could erase her mind and make her obey, couldn’t he do the same to Nathan?  This way, he doesn’t have to kill his own son.  Damn Petrellis always trying to kill each other every chance they get.  We got this last time when Peter shot Nathan when he could of just time traveled back to tell him what’s up.  Because of the attempted murder of Nathan, Nathan’s flew for the first time out of fear, and also why his wife is in a wheel chair.

The Present

Hiro wakes up from his sleep, now knowing everything, and now has to tell Angela about Arthur.  Hiro and Ando hear a scream outside the hut and goes outside to check out what happened.  They see that Usutu has been decapitated (Weird how Usutu didn’t see that one coming).  Hiro finds the missing head, and is confronted by Arthur, who now knows that Hiro can ruin his plans.  He now takes Hiro’s powers thus making him really powerful.

Oh man, all I have to say for the next episode is that Arthur is truly the most powerful now with immortality, flight, invisibility and the ability to time travel.  Let’s hope that the next episode can be as entertaining as this one.

Pacific Media Expo (PMX) is similar event to Anime Expo (AX): experiencing Japanese pop culture, especially Anime. Both events have cosplayers. But this is where the similarities end. While Anime Expo has become a huge event every July 4th weekend, Pacific Media Expo is on its last legs. But just because PMX is on its deathbed, didn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it.
