I’m not a huge fan of the NFL, but when the Super Bowl comes around, bring me the food and drinks and let’s celebrate! This year, EA SPORTS and Madden NFL 09 predicted that the Steelers’ win. They had the two teams, controlled by AI, compete with the latest updated roster, and now knowing this, I shouldn’t have put money on the Cardinals. Their prediction score as of now is 6 to 1.

Video game or computer simulations used for entertainment purposes aren’t a new thing. In the movie Rocky Balboa, they used a computer simulation to predict a “what if” match between Rocky Balboa in his prime and Mason Dixon, the current heavyweight champ. Rocky won that simulation, and that’s enough for Rocky to want to fight again in his 60s (The simulation was a nod to the Rocky vs. Muhammad Ali simulation).

With video games being so popular and AI being more advanced, pretty soon, everyone’s going to run their own simulations on everything. We already see video games simulating life in games like The Sims where you control people and help them live and mundane things, and the GTA series where the game imitates cars running into pedestrians who reacts to getting hit in many different ways. Maybe in the future, video games can predict if we’re going to be in a recession or not.

Using video game simulations can also be used for other ways other than predicting who’s going to win the Super Bowl. It can be used for training. Take for example, the story of a man who saved lives from learning medical aid in the PC game called America’s Army. The game is really fun even if it’s a vehicle to persuade teens to join the army. Just imagine if they released a simulated doctor game, soon everyone will be able to perform a triple bypass surgery.

So I’m thinking the future of video game simulation will be so accurate that it can predict ANY sport’s outcome. If that’s the case, the future of gambling will be diminished. But then would there be any need of the actual sport if you can predict anything?
