Vintage Toy Of The Week: M.A.S.K.

Vintage Toy Of The Week: M.A.S.K.

This week’s vintage toys comes from our long time reader, Paladin.  These M.A.S.K. toys aren’t from the Jim Carrey movie.  The toys are based on a cartoon show made in 1985 by Kenner.  M.A.S.K. stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand.  The line is similar to Transformers with transforming licensed vehicles from Chevrolet and Nissan.

Before the transformation

Led by Matt Trakker, the good guys battle V.E.N.O.M. (Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem).  These two groups love using acronyms and they also like to fight each other, usually introducing new characters each episode so they can sell more toys.  Just like most 80′s toys, these toys were colorful and pretty innovative.  Sure, it doesn’t make sense where some weapons are placed but you’ve never guessed the regular vehicles transformed into war machines.  One vehicle, the Volcano is motorized and takes batteries(1st vehicle on the top left of the picture below).  It rolls and can pop up to attack if you choose the setting.  Now that’s nifty.

Thanks again to Paladin for sharing his collection.

I loved M.A.S.K. when I was a kid. The only toy I had of theirs was the motorcycle that turns into a chopper cycle!

It brings back so many memories to me(34yrs old now)
Hence why i have collected the biggest range ever,
All the figures carded and vehicles boxed and accesories ever made.
Wish they would give M.a.s.k. the Transformers treatment.

I have some mask toys. And am trying to see if they are rare.I have the green and purple beetle and was wondering if it a rare find in itself. Thanks

Hi Frankie, I hate to say it but Detonator is not too rare–I’d say differently due to the fact that there is only one currently on ebay going for $60 (buy it now) and is from England. The Jacques LaFleur figures seem to average $5-$10.

“Detonator” is from the last line of M.A.S.K. called “Split Seconds, it turns into 2 vehicles and has the main character figure to pilot one of the vehicles and a translucent figure (same mold) that can pilot the other vehicle.

There is a great fansite that shows all of the toys called albertpenello.com/mask. Click “Toy line” on the top left and scroll down to “Split Seconds 4th series.” Then, just check out the site, it’s very interesting. Also, for value, check ebay, type in “M.A.S.K. Detonator” and see what the price is going for.

The highest prices go to “Thunderhawk” “Rhino” “Manta” and “Stiletto” which SHOULD come with “Gloria Baker.”

The first link below is to my Gloria Baker review and the second is to the fansite.
