“Got to get tough, YO JOE!” Man, was this a blast from the past, I remember 1991 where I was getting older and my interest was starting to wane from the usual cartoons; however, I never missed G.I. Joe.

The Secret World of Arrietty is another lush, visually enthralling classic from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Dubbed with great care by Disney and now on blu-ray with an amazing transfer, the movie springs to life. Based on the novel The Borrowers and written by the master Miyazaki, the look of the movie is quite stunning and full of vibrant life. The story also has a gentle message about respecting all creatures and beings regardless of their size or place in the food chain. The Avengers isn’t the best superhero movie of all time (as many are saying), but it is a whole lot of fun. Well-cast, paced, and executed, it’s a crowd-pleaser with a ton of great moments, and some surprisingly funny ones as well. Joss Whedon does an admirable job of making this huge blockbuster a film that works on all levels. It’s far from perfect though. Overlong and a tedious first 30-40 minutes make seal its fate when comparing it to Nolan’s Batman films and Spider-man 2. I also preferred X-Men: First Class to The Avengers. The X-Men are a hugely popular comic book and franchise from Marvel that has been around for eons. Last seen on the big screen in the impressive X-Men: First Class, they return in this 2 DVD set of the complete series of the anime. The series contains all 12 episodes and a few special features. Game of Thrones is just what the doctor ordered for fantasy fans. It’s a big, gory epic with great acting and excellent production values. The “game” is really a play for power between different factions and Game of Thrones isn’t just a series for fantasy fans, it’s a series for fans of great drama as well. The blu-ray set is simply gorgeous. The picture and audio are damn close to flawless while there are copious extras for fans to watch and enjoy. All ten episodes of the first season are included in this handsome, boxed set.

After a less than promising first movie, Ghost Rider rides once again in a new movie co-written by one of Batman’s saviors, David S Goyer and directed by Neveldine/Taylor, the two hipsters who made the Crank films such bloody, good fun. Alas, this Ghost Rider is an incoherent, cheap-looking dud. Laughably acted, poorly written, even the lighting is terrible. This ugly looking dud can’t even come up with decent action scenes. Chronicle is a fresh and entertaining take on the whole “found footage” genre. It’s not a horror movie at all, it’s more of a superhero morality play. It’s also grounded in the reality of its subjects and teen angst. Unlike the overrated Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, the whole “shaky cam” bit is kept to a minimum, while the special effects are seamless and extremely effective. Chronicle also benefits from some nice acting from its mostly unknown cast and a lean running time that never overstays its welcome.
