Smallville: Season 10, Episode 2 “Shield”

Smallville: Season 10, Episode 2 “Shield”

Smallville was a bit uneven, but overall another good episode. The awesome villain Deadshot (who sadly, was in the episode all too briefly) appeared in the episode and displayed a menacing charm. He was shot perfectly from low angles like a baddie in an old western. Lois Lane has packed up and moved overseas and Cat Grant has started at the Daily Planet. The opening scenes establish her as a republican go-getter (reminding me instantly of girls I attended college with) who hates heroes and sees herself as a truth-teller who would be right at home on FOX News. Keri Lynn …

TV Review: Smallville Season 10, Episode 1 “Lazarus”

TV Review: Smallville Season 10, Episode 1 “Lazarus”

Smallville 5 TV Review: Smallville Season 10, Episode 1 “Lazarus”

Smallville started its tenth and final season Friday night. As a massive fan of the show I’ve decided to recap/review each and every episode up to the historic series finale. Check back here every week for my latest Smallville reviews.

Lazarus is the first episode of season 10. After a strong 9th season, Smallville hits the ground running with a solid mix of adventure and storytelling. The episode has a necessary amount of setup needed for the rest of the season while quickly resolving the cliffhangers of the season finale of season 9. The episode begins with Clark falling to the …

Banned Books Week: In celebration of all the stuff they don’t want you to read

Banned Books Week: In celebration of all the stuff they don’t want you to read

gossip girl Banned Books Week: In celebration of all the stuff they don’t want you to read

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 to celebrate the freedom to read.  September 25 was the official launch and it runs through October 2.  Banned Books Week was created in response to an increase in the number of books which were banned or people attempted to ban that year.  Since then over 1000 books have been banned or “challenged” in the US.  Reasons for the uproar include profanity, slang, offensive representations of racial or religious groups, and positive portrayals of homosexuals.  Of course no book is immune to this scrutiny, even (and probably especially) Manga.

The American Library Association gathers …

DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!

DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!

kamen rider3 DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!

You might already be familiar with the Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight series currently showing in the US.  Kamen Rider V3 was a live-action, superhero TV show that first came out in the early 70’s, around the same time as Kikaider. (See my Kikaida article for more info).  A guy named Toru Hirayama got together with Ishinomoto, the creator of Kikaider, and put together a TV show based on a v3b DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!guy who wore a mask and costume that somewhat resembled a grasshopper. It was called Kamen Rider (which means “masked rider”).

The two shows follow a similar formula:  a cyborg …

Movie Review: The Town

Movie Review: The Town

The Town Movie Review: The Town

Ben Affleck’s new movie The Town is a tense, often terrific crime drama taking place on the mean streets of Boston in a tight-knit blue-collar community. Affleck plays the leader (more or less) of an elite team of bank and armed truck robbers whose latest robbery goes awry when a psychotic cohort kidnaps a bank worker, changing the course of all their lives forever. Affleck is on familiar turf here, but he seems to know the turf so well. The macho dialogue has the air of authenticity along with those thick Bohstonnn accents from Affleck and his fine supporting cast. Jeremy …

Movie Review: Easy A

Movie Review: Easy A

EASY A Movie Review: Easy A

Easy A is an amusing, teen comedy spin on The Scarlett Letter. The movie takes its inspiration from the classic (but hard to read or enjoy) novel. Easy A is very much in the vain of Clueless or 10 Things I Hate About You, but its script isn’t as clever as either of those two films. It’s more mildly amusing than laugh out loud funny. Still, Easy A hits on some truths about the pain of high school life and the obvious double standard involving sex. Guys get congrats and body bumps for having a lot of sex, while girls are …

Reaper Canceled, But Not Forgotten: The Best Short Lived Television Shows

Television is a big part of all our lives, whether we want to admit so or not. There’s nothing worse than when a show we love is yanked off the air just as we become attached to it. I’ve decided to list (in no particular order) my favorite shows that were canceled much too early.

The Tick- Silly and hilarious live-action version of the popular comic book series and animated show that was canceled by FOX. Only 9 episodes were filmed and FOX didn’t even air them all, I had to buy the DVD set to watch the rest of the …

Movie Review: Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

Resident Evil 11 Movie Review: Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

Resident Evil: Afterlife is loud, inane, often dumb, in other words, a near perfect addition to the Resident Evil franchise. I have great affection for the first two Resident Evil flicks, while the 3rd one was somewhat lacking. It was basically a Mad Max clone that wasn’t bad, but only rousing from time to time. Original director and slick hack Paul W.S Anderson is back in the director’s chair and he brings with him a bag of 3D tricks and some kick-ass action scenes. Turn your brain off and enjoy the ride.

Resident Evil: Afterlife picks up after the events of …

TV Commentary: Exploring the fist-pumping appeal of MTV’s Jersey Shore

TV Commentary: Exploring the fist-pumping appeal of MTV’s Jersey Shore

Jersey Shore TV Commentary: Exploring the fist pumping appeal of MTVs Jersey Shore

Jersey Shore is MTV’s most popular weekly series in almost ten years. The ratings are staggering and just keep going up each week. When the show first debuted, it was watched by a mere 1.2 million viewers. Last week’s episode was watched by 6.5 million viewers. Why is Jersey Shore the hottest reality show on TV? Is it just a good guilty pleasure, a trainwreck you can’t help but watch, or is there something deeper in play? I just enjoy the show and find it entertaining as Hell. As an Italian-American, I’m not offended by the trashy antics of the fist-pumping …

Jason David Frank aka the Green/White Ranger was spending his Labor Day weekend with fans in Sin City for Anime Vegas.   Over course of the convention, Frank was busy answering questions from fans and signing autographs.  His Q & A was great because he was really enthusiastic and  he loves the fans.  While most of the questions was about Power Rangers, I decided to talk to him about his future in MMA.

Below is the interview:

I really didn’t expect Strikeforce to be contacting him this early in this MMA career but I’m excited about the news.  If he keeps …
